VPD- Visual Processing Disorder

Visual Processing Disorder (VPD ) is when a child can read but does not comprehend what they read. They have difficulty making sense of what the eyes “see.” It is possible to have 20/20 vision and still have difficulty processing what is seen. While we “look” with our eyes, we truly see with our brains. VPD is a vision processing problem that affects about 3%–5% of school-aged children. Like other learning differences, it shows up by the time they start reading in 2nd grade or by the age of seven. They will read something and don't understand what they read. Kids with VPD hate reading and do poorly in tests at school. Sometimes they would have to read a paragraph four times to even have an idea of what is happening. They can't possibly do homework by themselves and teachers...

APD- Auditory Processing Disorder

Auditory processing disorder (APD) is a hearing problem that affects about 3% – 5% of school-aged children. Kids with this condition, also known as Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD), can't understand what they hear in the same way other kids do. This is because their ears and brain don't fully coordinate. Some children say all they hear is "blah, blah, blah" when the teacher is speaking and giving directions. Some kids have trouble following directions. Therefore, it appears that they won't do what they are told since they did not process the words because they don't know what they are being asked to do. They don't remember details of what they just heard, it appears like they are listening but not following. They have trouble learning to read and write and have difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments...

Executive Function Disorder

The fundamental skills related to Executive Function include proficiency in adaptable thinking, planning, self-monitoring, self-control, working memory, time management, and organization. Executive Function Disorder is the umbrella for all other processing disorders. It is like the 3rd prong and must be treated just like VPD and APD. You will notice this with children when they forget their book at school that is vital for homework or they can never plan anything out in their brain. Their school bag and bedroom are a mess, and you need to remind them to do every little step every single day! They can't stay on task at school or with homework and need someone to remind them or nudge them along.

Our Education System

Processing disorders show up in students at school when they start reading usually by the age of seven or 2nd grade. Children that have Visual Processing Disorder (VPD) and/or Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) will not be able to comprehend what they are reading in class or understand what the teacher instructed them to do. They start taking longer to do their work and their grades gradually go downwards until they give up. Then they stop trying and it is so difficult for them to do homework, they will be so frustrated with themselves that they cry. Schools will eventually see that there is a learning difference and most likely they will give extra time or give extra help to the student, sometimes taking them out of the classroom which is embarrassing for them. But without diagnosing...
